New England Energy Council: BigBelly Solar named 2011 Emerging Company of the Year

BOSTON, MA – The New England Clean Energy Council (NECEC) last night hosted its fourth-annual “Green Tie Gala” to celebrate the continued growth of its membership and the region’s clean energy sector. NECEC honored companies and individuals from across New England with awards acknowledging their leadership in the growing clean energy sectors and in New England’s cleantech innovation cluster.

The New England Energy Council names BigBelly Solar as the 2011 Emerging Company of the Year.

Emerging Company of the Year: BigBelly Solar
BigBelly Solar, a global provider of innovative and sustainable solutions for the management of waste & recycling, was named Emerging Company of the Year for its dramatic growth and substantial global influence in increasing resource efficiencies and reducing environmental impacts in the waste management industry. BigBelly Solar saw a significant expansion around the globe in 2011, highlighted by the City of Chicago’s decision to convert their entire downtown operations over to the system, with subsequent expansion into other agencies of the City. BigBelly Solar will finish the year with more than 13,000 waste & recycling stations deployed worldwide.

Boston Herald: Bright outlook for BigBelly Solar

November 8, 2011

The New England Clean Energy Council has chosen BigBelly Solar Inc. as its “Emerging Company of the Year.”

And before anyone starts wondering if this business will go the way of Solyndra, well, they’re not even remotely similar.

Solyndra is known as the big solar panel-making bust. BigBelly is known as the maker of solar panel-powered trash compactors.

The Newton company, originally called Seahorse Power, has been making trash collection more efficient and reducing sanitation department costs since 2003. (I remember then-Worcester Mayor Tim Murray checking out a prototype outside the DCU Center back in 2005, years before he joined the Patrick administration’s clean energy agenda.)

The privately held company said it had a “significant” expansion this year, including Chicago’s downtown-wide rollout of BigBelly cans, and now counts 13,000-plus units deployed worldwide. Boston, MIT and Boston University are customers.

In announcing the award picked up at the council’s “Green Tie Gala” on Wednesday night, BigBelly CEO Barry Fougere noted the company’s recent shift to an information services company – a type of “smart grid” that provides wireless connections and software to analyze waste disposal and recycling rates.

Valpey Fisher Announces Miniature Hi-Rel/COTS Oscillator with Wider Frequency Range

HOPKINTON, MA & BALTIMORE, MD – November 7, 2011 – Valpey Fisher Corporation (NASDAQ: VPF), a leading provider of high performance integrated products for timing and frequency control, today announced it expanded the frequency range offered in its VFH3225, the industry’s smallest size High Reliability/Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) oscillator which offers outstanding performance for military applications. The device now works from 25MHz to 160MHz. It delivers frequency stability of ±50 ppm over -55°C to +125°C in a miniature 3.2 x 2.5 mm SMD package. Military group A, B, or C testing is available for the device.

Introduced today and showcasing at MILCOM 2011 booth #2025 in Baltimore, Maryland USA, the VFH3225 is a low-power device with CMOS output and supply voltages of 3.3V, 2.8V, 2.5V or 1.8V. Typical current consumption is as low as 8 mA and to minimize battery drain the device also has an output enable/disable option. Its miniature size, 3.2 x 2.5 mm, allows for efficient use of board space and product designs expansion.

“At Valpey Fisher, our products continue to evolve to meet the needs of many applications,” says John Fortune, Director of Sales and Marketing for Valpey Fisher. “The new frequency range of the VFH3225 allows the part to be in more industrial and military designs where board space is at a premium and high temperature operation is a requirement.”

Valpey Fisher: Eight Decades of Innovation in Oscillators

HighRoads Launches Free Compliance Assessment Tool for Checkup on Employee Health Benefits Communication Practices

HighRoads, the industry leader in employer health care compliance and benefits management, today launched its online Compliance Assessment Tool, a free high-level analysis of how a company is performing in critical communication practices required by ERISA, HIPAA, FMLA and other regulatory bodies. In just minutes, an HR professional can answer the assessment questionnaire and get a score and informative recommendations in areas that need improvement.

“The need for compliant, effective health benefits communications continues to grow, particularly in light of proposed new 2012 regulations, such as the Summary of Benefits Coverage, that may increase the communications burden on employers,” said Kim Buckey, SPD Practice Lead, HighRoads. “The HighRoads Compliance Assessment Tool is an efficient way to get a sense of how well your company is performing in meeting the communication needs of employees, and the specific requirements of federal agencies,” Buckey added.

The HighRoads Compliance Assessment examines four major activities that are essential to communications compliance. Each section is graded Poor, Okay or Good based on user responses.

HighRoads serves a large number of employers which offer self-insured employee benefits plans. On behalf of these companies, HighRoads prepares Summary Plan Documents (SPDs) and Summary Material Modifications to communicate with the employers’ plan participants, and provides an automated system to ensure timely, accurate distribution and updating.

“As we head into the next year of reform, HighRoads thought it was the right time to offer companies a free checkup on their communication practices. Based on HighRoads research we know there is still considerable variance in the methods used to achieve full compliance regarding SPDs, for example. This assessment gives companies a benchmark by which to consider areas of improvement,” said Buckey.
