Mass. Capital portfolio company Exergen Corporation recently announced a donation of $10,000 to The One Fund Boston to help those affected by the Boston Marathon tragedy. The donation was made in honor of the many doctors and nurses of the Boston Marathon Medical Team, which is manned by volunteers. The Boston Marathon Medical Team has provided medical care at the finish line and along the race route every year since 1978 and is the oldest such medical care organization in the world.
In addition to providing acute care for injured runners, the Boston Marathon Medical Team has conducted research to improve methods of care and to prevent injuries among runners. Exergen was approached to participate in a study of how runners’ core body temperature is affected by completing a marathon. “By volunteering with the Boston Marathon Medical Team, Exergen was able to delve deeper into thermometry for marathon runners as well as for general use. We built a solid scientific foundation for the eventual development of temporal artery thermometry, now relied upon by millions of people in homes, doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals,” said Dr. Francesco Pompei, CEO of Exergen Corporation, maker of the Exergen TemporalScanner™. “For 18 years, Exergen has stood side by side with the doctors and nurses assisting runners as they crossed the finish line and we are proud to make this donation in their honor.”
